How the new draw protected England’s route

Fifa placed the top four ranked teams in separate quadrants of the draw, meaning they could not meet each other before the semi-finals. England and France were deliberately put on opposite sides of the knockout bracket, while Spain and Argentina were kept apart until a potential final. In practice, that removed the possibility of England drawing another elite side in the last 16 or quarter-finals.

There was a condition attached. The protection only held if each of the four won their group — and all four did. England topped Group L, which is what kept them inside their own quadrant and out of the path of Spain, Argentina and France until now.

Fifa rankings were introduced in 1992. In more than three decades and eight tournaments, the top four ranked sides had never all reached the semi-finals together. Whether that reflects a widening gulf between the elite and everyone else, or simply a draw structure engineered to keep the big names apart, is the argument that will follow this tournament around. The honest answer is that both are doing some of the work.

What it means for Tuchel’s side now

The upside of the quadrant system is gone. From this point England cannot avoid one of the world’s top three — and if they win, they meet another one in the final. There is no soft route left, no favourable half of the draw, no seeding advantage to bank.
